Historical Atlas of the United States (Centennial Edition)
The National Geographic Society (NGS) has marked its centennial not only by giving the nation a lavishly informative historical atlas (there are more than 100 historical maps, as well as 380 other maps) , but by presenting 35,000 copies to the libraries of secondary schools across the country. More than the television generation will find the atlas diverting and instructive; all Americans, including specialists of every kind, will be caught and taught by it. Thematic sections (e. G. , the land and its people) are presented against a chronology from 1400 to the present. This counterpoint offers a staggering range of visual ways of conceiving of our past. The oldest maps share pages with innovative demographic charts–all surrounded by some 450 photographs and prints which bring the past vividly to life in full NGS color. – Alfred L. Bush, Princeton Univ. Lib. , N. J.
